Examples & Explanations

The buttons = The keys on the phone that have the numbers and letters for us to push.

My son phoned the police by mistake after he took my phone and started hitting the buttons.

To call = To ring or phone somebody.

They said they would call me to let me know if I got the job, but it’s been two days since I saw them.

To call back = To return someone’s phone call.

He isn’t here right now, but he’ll call you back.

An emoji A small picture that shows how we feel and is included with a text or email message. For example, a happy or a sad face.

I always use emojis with my messages. They help people understand how I feel!

To message = To send a text to someone

Please send me a quick message when you arrive home.

To press = To push something.

Please press ‘one’ for the sales department.

To receive = To get something from someone.

Please phone me back urgently as soon as you receive this message.

To send = To give something to someone.

I will send you a message in the morning, so you don’t forget.

To text = To send someone a written message by phone.

She sent him 20 texts, but he didn’t reply. I don’t think he likes her.

A touch screen = A phone or a computer that can be operated by your finger touching the screen at the front.

I like touch screen phones more than phones with buttons because they are much quicker to use.

Did you know?

In the 1990s, only 1% of the world owned a mobile phone but by 2016 there were over 7 billion of them! That’s nearly as many phones as people on the planet!
